Soccer referee pleads guilty to pushing student manager after incident caught on camera

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY — Randall Smith, a 64-year-old referee, pleaded guilty to assault and battery after pushing a 16-year-old student manager during a soccer match at the Keystone Soccer Complex near Traverse City. Smith faces a fine and possible jail time for the incident.

The incident unfolded on Oct. 14 during a match when Smith, officiating the game, tripped over the student manager who was standing near the bench. After bumping into the manager, Smith raised his penalty flag and pushed the teenager over the bench.

The Michigan State Police responded to the incident and conducted an investigation, leading to Smith’s arrest on Oct. 28. He was formally charged with assault and battery after the police submitted their report to the Grand Traverse County Prosecutor’s Office.

Following the incident, Smith was removed from the roster of registered officials with the Michigan High School Athletic Association, effectively ending his officiating career.

Smith will be sentenced next month and could face a fine of up to $500, potential jail time and probation.
