Joburg’s Joey Smokevitch named to the MHSAA Student Advisory Council

JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg-Lewiston’s Joey Smokevitch was named to the MHSAA Student Advisory Council earlier this week. Smokevitch was one of 8 sophomore student-athletes to be picked to serve a two-year term on the council. Joey plays both football and basketball for the Cardinals and was picked from an applicant pool of 125 student-athletes.

Smokevitch will get the chance to provide feedback on athletics from a student perspective and even made history when he was selected.

“There’s never been anyone from Joburg to be on this. There are some people from Gaylord and Saint Mary’s that have been on this, and I just decided I wanted to try and represent our school, our little community, and try and get us out there a little bit more.” Said Smokevitch. “It means a lot to me to be able to, like, represent our area and schools and kids around Michigan. It really means a lot to me; it’s a really great opportunity that I get to do this.”

The council meets 8 times each school year and for a leadership camp.
