Northern Michigan products Blake Cassidy and Andy Soma are key parts in LSSU’s strong start

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State men’s basketball players Andy Soma and Blake Cassidy are both posting in career best years in their senior seasons. Cassidy, a Pellston native, is averaging a career-high in points, rebounds, and assists per game, and he’s known Soma for a long time.

“We played AAU together back in junior, sophomore year, so to know that we were going to go to Same college, It’s kind of crazy.” Blake Cassidy said. “We never talked about it, never had any, you know, real conversations. But now we kind of look back and reminisce about, you know, can you believe we’ve been here for a half a decade, is what we call it. And it’s like, it’s crazy, but I wouldn’t want it any other way and I love it.”

Soma has started about half of the team’s games thus far and he’s averaging both a career high in field goals percentage and points per game.

“I try to be a leader, first and foremost. Fifth year, obviously, one of the older guys on the team have some of the most experience out of the guys and kind of been there and done that a little bit. So, I just try to bring that positive energy and leadership every day and, you know, kind of be the heart of our team,” Soma said.
