Hook & Hunting: Houghton Lake man will fish 36 hours to support food pantries

A Houghton Lake man is trying sink food insecurity using his rod and reel.

Frank Krajenka has held a 24-hour fish-a-thon every year for the past four years for the Roscommon County Food Pantry.

But this year, he’s going bigger, expanding the fish-a-thon to 36 hours to fundraise for an additional pantry this year, the Crawford County Community Christian Help Center.

He will be fishing Sunday September 15th starting at 6am through Monday, ending at 6 pm

He said he hopes it starts a friendly competition between the two pantries.

“I donate $0.50 per fish, and I average about 100 fish per year. So, you know, per day basically. Yeah. And so, I try to give $50 or $100 whatever I can. I got to do my part because the fishing is for me. It’s kind of a selfish thing, but it’s for me.

Krajenka said people can donate directly to the go fund me pages set up for each county.

Chris Ashcraft, the executive director of the Roscommon County Food Pantry says it’s filling a need in the community.

“It’s extra food that goes into the monthly boxes to the people who come through our door. Roscommon County is in the top three in the state for food insecurity. a ton of need. we’re very rural, so that is what adds to our numbers. In the last two and a half years, we’ve had over 2000 unduplicated families walk through our door,” said Ashcraft.
