EGLE recently awarded $9.7 million in drinking and natural water grants across the state.
The MI Clean Water Plan grants help communities upgrade aging infrastructure including lead pipes, ensure healthy drinking water and protect Michigan’s environment. Here’s a look at projects coming to Northern Michigan.
City of Cheboygan: $570,000
Grant funding will help the City identify lead service lines for replacement. The process involves hydrovacing, where high-pressure water cuts and liquefies the soil while vacuuming it up. These projects will include restoration of hydrovaced locations and potential replacement of service lines.
Haring Charter Township: $3,000,000
Grant funding will help construct a new well in Cadillac to address PFAS, or “forever chemicals.” The project includes the well, a well house with treatment equipment, a meter, well controls, electrical power, and a watermain to connect the new well to the existing water system.
Before construction, a hydrogeological study will ensure the well is protected from any nearby contaminants. After construction, the well water system will be extended to areas impacted by PFAS, with any contaminated private wells properly abandoned.
