LELAND — Leland hosted Onekama for a Northwest Conference basketball game on Thursday night, where the visiting Portagers secured a 39-23 victory. The evening also served as a celebration for the Leland soccer team, which was honored for winning the second state championship in school history.
The team’s title run occurred during the fall season. The newly revealed banner will serve as a permanent reminder of the championship for Comets fans.
During the event, members of the soccer team received their championship rings following their title-winning season in the fall. The school also revealed a new banner in the gymnasium to commemorate the team’s achievement.
The basketball game remained a close contest through the first two quarters. Leland trailed by only two points as the teams headed into the locker room at halftime. Onekama eventually pulled away in the second half, securing the 39-23 victory by controlling the game at the free-throw line.
