ANN ARBOR — Sherrone Moore’s time as the University of Michigan’s head football coach has come to an abrupt end.
According to CBS Sports, Michigan has fired Moore for cause following an investigation that uncovered credible evidence of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, violating university policy.
University of Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel said in a statement: “U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately. Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior. Biff Poggi has been appointed head football coach in an interim capacity, effective immediately.”
Moore, who joined Michigan in 2018 as a tight ends coach, rose to co-offensive coordinator in 2021 and became the sole offensive coordinator in 2023. He also served as acting head coach during Jim Harbaugh’s suspension due to a sign-stealing scandal, leading the Wolverines to a 3-0 record during that period.
During his tenure as head coach following Harbaugh’s departure, Moore achieved a 17-8 overall record, including a bowl win over Alabama in the 2024 season.
The Wolverines are currently preparing for the Citrus Bowl after finishing the regular season with a 9-3 record. They are set to face Texas on December 31.
UPDATE: Sherrone Moore was detained by police in Saline, Michigan, on Wednesday and subsequently handed over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for further investigation into potential charges.
