DETROIT- The Tigers kept their season alive with a win over the Mariners in Game 4 of the ALDS. The series is now tied 2-2 and will head back to Seattle for the deciding Game 5 on Friday.
Casey Mize started on the bump for the Tigers and was pulled after three innings in which he allowed one run. Seattle would then tally runs in the fourth and fifth innings and Detroit trailed 3-0.
A Dillon Dingler double scored Zach McKinstry in the bottom of the fifth inning to get Detroit on the board. Jahmai Jones followed that up with a double and would later come around to score on a single by Javy Baez and suddenly the game was tied.
Troy Melton put a zero on the board in the top of the sixth and Detroit exploded with four more runs in the bottom half. Riley Greene and Baez each blasted home runs and Zach Mckinstry added an RBI single to make the score 7-3 Tigers.
Gleyber Torres later tacked on a round-tripper of his own in the bottom of the seventh inning, and the offense manufactured one more run of insurance in the 8th to put Detroit up by six runs.
Five different pitchers were used by the Tigers; Troy Melton would pick up the win for three innings of scoreless work and Will Vest shut the door in the ninth for an extending 9-3 Tigers victory.
Detroit lost in Game 5 of the ALDS last year against the Guardians and are a win away from reaching the ALCS for the first time since 2013.
