SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — The Michigan Walleye Tour made a stop in Sault Ste. Marie last weekend with around 300 anglers trying to reel in the top prize of $12,000 and a chance to earn a spot in the championship in august.

The two-day event started Friday at 7:00 a.m. with ideal conditions, sunny skies and light winds.

102 boats took off at Aune Osborn Park to find prime walleye fishing areas on the St. Marys River, from Sault Ste. Marie to northern Lake Huron.

“Some guys like to troll, some like to jig, some like to cast. There’s all kinds of different ways to catch fish. The St. Marys River, from where we are at all the way to DeTour, you have to be good at all of them. You can’t just do one. But if you like a certain way and going to serve you that way and you have to go to a place in the river to do that. They like coming here, but it’s a challenge. They do say that. It’s one of the hardest places we come to but this is tournament fishing,” said Jeff Willis, Walleye Tour Tournament Director.

The Michigan Walleye Tour Championship will be held August 15 and 16 in Port Austin.
