Northern Michigan seeing less people playing in competitive tennis leagues

TRAVERSE CITY - The number of people playing competitive tennis in Northern Michigan has dwindled, even though tennis participation is at an all-time high. There are leagues for 18 and up, 40 and up, 55 and up, and 65 and up available in Northern Michigan. The leagues play at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa using the indoor facilities. League play matches are also held at Bay Tennis & Fitness in Harbor Springs. The director of tennis at the Grand Traverse Resort, George Lowe, hopes to see more competitive tennis being played in Northern Michigan.

“It’s not necessarily a tennis problem. I think it’s more of like our Northern Michigan problem or challenge our Northern Michigan challenge.” Said Lowe. “Then again, there are folks that are, you know, retiring now that are tennis players that are saying to me, oh, we will captain a team. You know, this year we didn’t have a three-league last year. We have one this year. We haven’t had a men’s league team for 5 or 6 years, but I think we’re going to have some men’s 55 and over teams this year.”
