Tarik Skubal pitched six shutout innings for Detroit, including a pair of five-pitch innings. The last MLB pitcher to accomplish that feat was Johnny Cueto on Oct. 14, 2015.

The bullpen took it the rest of the way as Detroit held on for a 3-1 win.

Game 2 of the best of three series is Wednesday at 2:30 p.m., also in Houston.
