Michigan State Police Gaylord post welcomes new leadership with Harold Terry

OTSEGO COUNTY — First Lieutenant Harold Terry has been appointed as the new commander of the Michigan State Police Gaylord Post. Terry was promoted to the leadership position in March 2026 and will oversee operations across five Northern Michigan counties.

The Gaylord Post provides law enforcement services to Otsego, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Antrim and Emmet counties. Terry previously served as the post’s assistant commander before his promotion to the commander role.

Terry is a native of West Branch. He joined the Michigan State Police as a member of the 116th Trooper Recruit School and received his first assignment as a trooper at the Flint Post.

In 2004, Terry joined the Michigan State Police Canine Unit. He was assigned to the Stephenson Post alongside his K9 partner until 2006. The canine team then transferred to the Houghton Lake Post, where they served until 2016.

Terry was promoted to uniform sergeant at the Houghton Lake Post, serving there until 2021. He then transferred to the Gaylord Post as a sergeant and later served as the assistant commander before his promotion to post commander.
