Minor dies after being struck by shuttle bus at Cherry Capital Airport

TRAVERSE CITY — A minor died Friday evening after being struck by a shuttle bus at Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City. The accident occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. on Fly Don’t Drive in front of the terminal.

Cherry Capital Airport Police Chief Joseph FitzGerald confirmed the fatality in a statement released Monday. The vehicle involved was a Metropolis shuttle bus, which is part of the fleet contracted by the airport to provide parking and transportation services.

Emergency personnel and bystanders attempted to save the individual’s life immediately after the collision. Police FitzGerald said that medical professionals who happened to be at the airport provided initial care. “The individual was immediately given medical attention by an off-duty trauma doctor and off-duty paramedic,” FitzGerald said. “Local EMS, Fire and other local enforcement departments were also immediately dispatched. Despite quick lifesaving attempts, we are deeply saddened the minor succumbed to injuries at the scene.”

Multiple law enforcement and emergency agencies responded to the call on Friday. The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, Traverse City Police Department and Michigan State Police assisted at the scene. Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting and MMR personnel were also dispatched to the terminal area.

The vehicle involved in the accident was operated by Metropolis, a company contracted by Cherry Capital Airport to manage parking and transportation. Metropolis provides shuttle services for the airport’s short-term, long-term and economy lots. The company is cooperating with the airport and local law enforcement during the inquiry.

Following the confirmation of the death, FitzGerald expressed sympathy for the victim’s family. “On behalf of the Cherry Capital Airport, I want to extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual who passed away,” FitzGerald said. “No words can ease the pain of such a sudden tragedy, but please know that our entire team stands with you during this unimaginably difficult time.”

No further details are being released at this time out of respect for those involved and to support the active investigation.
