MACKINAC BRIDGE — The Mackinac Bridge is currently closed to all traffic due to falling ice from the bridge’s towers and cables. Michigan Department of Transportation officials announced the closure around 11:30 a.m., noting the bridge will remain shut until conditions are deemed safe for travel.
The Mackinac Bridge Authority is monitoring weather patterns at various points across the nearly five-mile suspension bridge. Falling ice often causes winter closures on the span.
They did not have an estimate of when the bridge would reopen.
Drivers should avoid the bridge area to allow maintenance vehicles to operate. 9&10 News will share more information as it becomes available.
Official updates for the Straits area are available via local radio. Travelers are encouraged to tune to AM radio 530 or 1610 for the latest information regarding the bridge status.
The bridge authority also offers a mobile notification service for real-time reopening updates. Motorists can text the keyword “MacBridge” to 67283 to receive a text message once the bridge is cleared to resume traffic.
The Mackinac Bridge will reopen to traffic when weather conditions improve. The Mackinac Bridge Authority will continue to monitor the structure to determine when it is safe to resume travel.
