TRAVERSE CITY — Michigan State Police released the identity Tuesday of the man killed in a shooting involving a Traverse City Police Department officer. The incident happened late afternoon on Friday, Mar. 13 at an apartment complex in the 400 block of Munson Place.

Michigan State Police now tell us that the man shot and killed was Darnell Wilson, 50, from Traverse City.
Traverse City Police Chief Matt Richmond said officers went into the apartment to find Wilson lying on the living room floor.
Richmond said when officers announced their presence, Wilson got up, armed with a knife and came at them. He said officers gave loud verbal commands, which he did not follow.

Officers then used a Taser, which Richmond said was ineffective and then fired their duty weapons, stopping the threat.
Life-saving measures were performed on scene, but Wilson died from his injuries, Richmond said.
In a Mar. 17 news release, TCPD said a 58-year-old female victim was taken to Munson Medical Center after she suffered multiple lacerations and stab wounds, one which caused serious internal injuries, requiring emergency surgery. She is now said to be recovering and is set to be released.
All officers who responded were uninjured. They have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
Michigan State Police were called in to investigate the shooting involving a Traverse City Police officer, while the Traverse City Police Department is leading the investigation of the domestic assault.
