EMPIRE — Leelanau Christian Neighbors announced it is expanding its retail operations with a second Samaritans’ Closet thrift store at 11840 S. Lacore Rd. in Empire.

The nonprofit said the new location is intended to serve residents and visitors on the west side of Leelanau County by offering easier access to affordable goods and a local donation center.

Leelanau Christian Neighbors said it signed the lease and has started renovating the facility. The organization also hired a manager for the Empire location, who was training at the Lake Leelanau flagship store.

The organization expected to begin accepting community donations in mid-May. If renovations remain on schedule, Leelanau Christian Neighbors said it aimed to open the store by Memorial Day weekend.

“We are thrilled to plant roots on the west side of the county,” Executive Director Mary Stanton said. “By opening in Empire, we are making it easier for our neighbors to support LCN without the drive to Lake Leelanau. Every purchase made and every item donated stays local, directly funding our mission to assist Leelanau County residents in need.”

The organization said the Empire store will operate as a social enterprise, with all proceeds supporting Leelanau Christian Neighbors’ services, including food pantries and financial assistance programs.

Leelanau Christian Neighbors said it serves Leelanau County residents through food and baby pantries, Blessings in a Backpack, Samaritans’ Closet thrift stores and financial assistance for urgent needs.
