TRAVERSE CITY — People at homes and businesses near the Traverse City Wastewater Treatment Plant may notice increased odors as contractors shut down the odor control unit for a facility improvement project. The city says these activities are part of the ongoing Headworks and Ultra-Violet (UV) Disinfection Improvement Project.
According to the Traverse City Department of Municipal Utilities, the project is part of a modernization effort for the city’s wastewater infrastructure. The shutdown of the odor control unit is expected to result in temporary increases in odor in the areas immediately surrounding the plant.

During certain phases of construction, equipment and processes that are normally enclosed may be temporarily exposed or shut down. City leaders stated that these temporary conditions are a normal part of conducting critical infrastructure improvements. The work schedule for the project is weather dependent and changes to the construction timeline may be necessary as the project moves forward.
The city and its contractors said they are working to complete the upgrades as efficiently as possible while minimizing impacts to the community.
Modernization activities at the facility are anticipated to continue through April 2.
