Northport Public Schools introduces radio class for hands-on learning

LEELANAU COUNTY — Northport Public Schools launched a new radio broadcast program in September to teach students about the industry. The initiative allows students to operate a radio station through the school district website.

The program is available for middle and high school students. Out of a total school population of 100, 15 students are currently participating in the broadcast class.

Michael Ryan, the Northport Public Schools radio class teacher, established the program based on his professional background and personal interests. Ryan worked as a media executive before transitioning to a role at the school. Students in the elective learn various aspects of the business, including interviewing guests and managing technical operations.

The program has already connected students with industry professionals outside the classroom.

The class recently visited Midwestern Broadcasting in Traverse City after the local station reached out to the school. During the visit, students met talent and staff to learn about professional broadcasting careers. They were also featured on the air with local personalities Omelet and Finster.

Ryan said the professional station provided significant guidance to the students during their visit. “Midwestern broadcasting. They’ve they’ve been terrific mentors for us,” Ryan said. “They heard about us. They called us up. They brought us down to their studios in Traverse City. They showed us around. They put us on the air with, Omelet and Finster. They met staff. They met talent. They got to talk to people about what it was like to be in the business.”

Ryan said he intends to introduce live broadcasts and podcasts as the program expands. These developments are planned for the coming years.
