CENTRAL LAKE — The Village of Central Lake issued a boil water notice on March 3, 2026, following an emergency water main repair. The repair work caused a loss of water pressure for several residences and businesses in a small section of the village.

Village officials stated the loss of pressure could lead to bacterial contamination within the water system. While bacteria are common in the environment and generally not harmful, the village is recommending precautionary measures for all affected customers until the water is tested and confirmed safe.

The advisory covers properties on West State Street between Howard Street and the alley behind Mammoth Distilling and Adams Madams. Specific addresses on West State Street include the high school at 8169, as well as 8117, 8097, 8087, 8063, 8096, 8060 and 8041. Other affected locations include 2385, 2379 and 2363 Main Street, along with 8034 Brooks Street.

Residents are advised not to drink or serve water without boiling it for 5 minutes and allowing it to cool. This recommendation applies to water used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth and food preparation. The village suggests using bottled water as an alternative until the notice is lifted. Boiling the water is necessary to kill bacteria and other organisms that may have entered the system during the pressure loss.

Food establishment operators have been instructed to follow the Emergency Action Plans for Retail Food Establishments. This guidance is available through the Michigan Department of Agriculture website. Information regarding these emergency protocols is provided in English, Spanish, Arabic and Chinese to assist local business owners.

Water department staff are currently flushing the system to remove potential contaminants. They are also collecting bacteriological samples to verify that the water meets state drinking water standards. For more information, residents can contact the Village of Central Lake at 231-544-6483 or by email at villageclerk@centrallakemi.org. General guidelines on microbial risks are also available through the Environmental Protection Agency Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791.

Village officials estimate the problem will be resolved by Thursday, March 5, 2026. The boil water notice will remain in effect until sampling results verify the water is safe to drink. Another notice will be issued once the advisory has been lifted and updates will be posted on the village website at www.centrallakemi.org.
