TRAVERSE CITY - Northern Michigan athletes Kaila Kuhn and Winter Vinecki are set to represent Team USA in the Women’s Aerial Freestyle competition Tuesday morning at the Winter Olympics in Milan.
Kuhn, of Boyne City and Vinecki, of Gaylord, are making their appearance on the world stage after a season of preparation. The event relies on high-pressure execution where success is determined by seconds of performance and muscle memory.
In the aerial freestyle event, the difference between qualifying for the Olympic Games and competing for a medal often comes down to minute details. Once an athlete jumps, there is no opportunity for second-guessing or mid-air adjustments. Success depends on muscle memory and relying on years of preparation.
Alex Rose is a three-time Olympic discus thrower and a Northern Michigan native who grew up in West Branch. Rose said the environment in smaller regions often requires a different level of persistence from athletes compared to those in larger areas.
“There’s not as many opportunities in areas where, might be a little bit smaller, not as many clubs, sport options, things of that nature,” Rose said. “So, you’re kind of used to fighting for every inch that you get. And I think that’s something that, that, all of us northern Michigan athletes use to our advantage.”
Rose emphasized that competing on the world stage requires athletes to rely on their preparation rather than their emotions. He encouraged the two skiers to remain present during the competition and recognize the significance of their achievement.
“Take a deep breath and remember that you’ve earned your spot to be there,” Rose said. “And congratulations, you’re about to have the most exciting moment of your life and really soak it in. Have fun.”
Kuhn and Vinecki are scheduled to compete in the Women’s Aerial Freestyle event on Tuesday morning.
