State agencies question Consumers Energy’s dam sale plan

LANSING — Consumers Energy is receiving pushback from multiple state agencies over its plan to sell its collection of hydroelectric dams for $13.

Consumers said late last year that the company’s 13 dams would be sold to a Maryland-based private equity firm, which would then sell back electricity to Consumers.

They also plan to cement the arrangement in a 30-year contract.

Consumers has argued that it would be more expensive for them to repair and operate the dams themselves.

Spokesperson Brian Wheeler said that the private equity firm has “committed capital resources available to bring the dams that currently do not meet criteria into compliance with regulators.”

But multiple state agencies are now asking to see more proof that this is the most cost-effective option.

The Attorney General’s office, Department of Natural Resources and Michigan Public Service Commission each have submitted filings questioning this determination or voicing opposition to the plan.

The MPSC is the state body with final say on the decision, and they could rule weeks or months down the line.
