LEELANAU COUNTY — Northport High School students had fun in the snow Wednesday while testing out sleds they designed and built themselves.
The race is part of a project based class put on by teacher Nick Jeffrey to learn a few things.
Nick said student will learn about “working in teams, getting challenged to build, design something and then test it and then go back to the drawing board and make, corrections if needed. ”
Ada Wetherbee is a 10th grade student and raced the penguin sled.
he ran the race before in elementary school, and says that after the race Wednesday, they may make future changes.
Ada said her group didn’t use a lot of cardboard, making the sled light, but she says next time they will reinforce the sled more.
Each team consisted of classmates in the same grades.
While the 10th grade sled lasted a few rounds up the hill, Lele Raphael, who built the teddy bear sled, wasn’t so lucky.
Lele said that when her teammate pushed the sled, they pushed her right into other person, cause the riders to take out each others sleds.
In the end and Ada and Lele say they would love to do this again.
And it isn’t the end for the penguin, teddy bear, Pegasus, and all the animals that raced, students will have a chance to try again on February 28th at the Northport Winter Carnival.
