Trump threatens to stop Gordie Howe International Bridge opening

DETROIT — President Donald Trump is threatening to stop the opening of the new Gordie Howe International Bridge between Windsor, Ontario and Detroit.

In a post on his Truth Social site, the President said the U.S. has been unfairly treated by Canada for decades when it comes to trade. He took issue that Canada owns both sides of the bridge and claims no products or materials from the U.S. were used in its construction.

He blamed then-President Barack Obama for “stupidly” giving them a waiver from the Buy American Act to do so, when Obama gave approval for the bridge in 2013. Trump said he would not allow the bridge to open until the U.S. was “fairly compensated” for everything the U.S. has given Canada and that negotiations would begin immediately for the U.S. to possibly take ownership of one half of the bridge.

The bridge has been completed, but is not set to open to traffic until sometime this year.
