GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY — An Interlochen man accused of attempting to kidnap a woman at a Garfield Township gas station has been found incompetent to stand trial. Scott Eugene Gensler, 51, was ruled incompetent by 86th District Court Judge Michael Stepka.
The ruling puts the criminal case on hold while Gensler receives treatment at a forensic center. Gensler previously pleaded not guilty to a felony kidnapping charge involving an incident on Nov. 23, 2025, at the Meijer gas station on U.S. 31. Police say bystanders at the station stopped the abduction from occurring.
At the time of Gensler’s November arraignment, Magistrate Tammi Rodgers set a $500,000 cash or surety bond at the arraignment. That bond will continue while Gensler undergoes treatment. Gensler will now be moved to a specialized facility, with treatment he would go on trial.
His court case is expected to be delayed for several months as officials wait to determine if he will be competent to stand trial in the future.
