GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY — East Bay Charter Township received three grants totaling $56,364.58 from the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians on Jan. 30. The funding, provided through the tribe’s 2% program, supports emergency medical response, regional elder services and local recreation.

The grant program requires nonprofit applicants to apply through a local unit of government that administers and distributes the funding. The township received two of the grants on behalf of local organizations and one specifically for its own ambulance service.

A $4,200 grant will fund upgrades to the Mt. Holiday Blue Lift. The project is designed to improve accessibility and the overall experience for families and visitors at the community ski area. Mount Holiday is one of two local nonprofits that applied for funding through the township.

The Elders Advisory Organization received $35,000 to support regional programming for older adults. This funding is intended to sustain services that promote connection, engagement and quality of life for area elders. These grants are distributed by the township as required under the rules of the tribal 2% program.

East Bay Ambulance was awarded $17,164.58 to purchase a Stryker Xpedition Powered Stair Chair. This specialized piece of equipment is used to improve patient safety and allow for more efficient transport in multi-level or challenging environments. Barbara Boersma serves as the director of East Bay Ambulance.

Boersma explained that having the correct tools is essential for providing high-quality care across the township’s service area. “This equipment will help our teams move patients more safely and efficiently, especially in situations where access is limited,” Boersma said.

East Bay Charter Township is located in Grand Traverse County, just east of Traverse City. It has a population of approximately 11,600 residents. The township includes a mix of suburban neighborhoods along the East Arm of Grand Traverse Bay and rural, lake-filled areas to the south.
