HOUGHTON LAKE — Tip Up Down USA is hitting the end of the 76th year.
The story of Tip Up Town USA begins 76 years ago, when a group of ice shanties decided to have a party.
Years later, the town celebrates with the theme of 1776, with the festival kicking off on the 24th
Executive Director Jay Jacobs with the Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce said this year is all things patriotic, adding they are getting a little bit of a jump in, in coordination with the nation’s 250th anniversary.
He added that having this festival means a lot for this town’s economy.
Jay said that Houghton Lake doesn’t have a lot of the essentials for economic growth, like a university, hospital, or even a defined downtown.
He added that they town relies on tourism brought in by Tip Up Town USA to get businesses through the winter into the springtime, when tourism starts picking up again.
This year’s weather has caused less people to come out and celebrate because it is simply too cold.
But, Jay said he isn’t worried, because he expects a good turnout Saturday.
Jay adds people can also look forward to their polar bear tip, the Tip Pup Contest, polish food, barbecue, and a family fun tent with music and fun contests.
