BENZIE/GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTIES — A major reconstruction project is coming to US-31 in Benzie and Grand Traverse counties, bringing detours and traffic changes later this year.
The $32.5 million project will rebuild 7.8 miles of highway between Sullivan Road and Reynolds Road, including construction of a new roundabout at J. Maddy Parkway and Long Lake Road near Interlochen.
MDOT says the work includes full pavement reconstruction, removal of unsuitable soils, road widening, and safety improvements such as a center left-turn lane.
Construction is expected to begin this spring, with drivers advised to plan for detours, especially around Interlochen. MDOT encourages motorists to follow official detour routes and slow down in work zones. Project updates and detour maps will be available on the MDOT website.
