TRAVERSE CITY — Celia Bissett of Highlands Middle School has been named this week’s Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education winner.
Bissett received a $2,000 check from the Michigan Lottery.
A nominator said Bissett helped make math engaging, including through an extended math program.

Bissett said she uses “Math Walks,” which she said she found online. Bissett described the activity as themed algebra problems that use pictures instead of variables. She said students later draw the problems on the sidewalk and other students solve them while walking outside.
The Excellence in Education Awards are sponsored by the Michigan Lottery, which said it has provided more than $29 billion to public education since 1972.
