Prosecutor finds officer justified in deadly Cadillac incident

CADILLAC — Wexford County Prosecutor, Johanna Carey, has determined that a deadly officer-involved shooting in Cadillac was justifiable and no criminal charges will be filed against the Cadillac police officer involved. This follows an investigation by Michigan State Police

The shooting happened during a traffic stop on Jan. 2, involving Charles Stewart II, who police say had previously committed a home invasion, armed robbery and vehicle theft earlier that day. They say Stewart attempted to draw a gun on the officer, prompting the officer to respond. The vehicle involved in the traffic stop was reported stolen earlier that day.

MSP says Stewart was found to be the same person responsible for several other crimes that day. This included a home invasion and an armed robbery in which another man, Stephen Billet, was killed.

Witnesses reported the officer had asked Stewart about weapons in the vehicle before the confrontation escalated when Stewart pointed a gun at the officer. This action led to the officer drawing his weapon in self-defense during the traffic stop.
