Michigan runners embrace winter chill with safety tips

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY — The state of Michigan is looking at negative temperatures as we head into the weekend, so for people who love to be active, why are they going out right now?

Jonny Tornga, the Outreach Coordinator for TART Trails, is an avid runner. He said the reason he is still running is because it is a good way to stay healthy and invigorated after a long day of work.

He also and shared some tips on how he stays warm during temperatures like we have seen, like using heat packets in your gloves and shoes.

He also shared something he just learned about, face tape.

Tornga shared “I learned a new trick, from some, skate skier friends of mine. You actually can buy, face tape. So, believe it or not, this is for your face, and you actually can put it on your cheeks. Nose. And it’s really great to protect against frostbite. If you don’t have, anti-freeze face tape, you can always use KT tape.”

He adds that items like latex gloves are useful for under your gloves, because they keep all the heat produced by your hands inside.

While Tornga encourages people to stay active in the winter, to not risk their safety.

He said people should pay attention to their weather channels and make sure it’s safe to go out.

9&10 Meteorologists also encourage people to take breaks inside if they go outside to warm up, as there is a risk of frostbite and hypothermia if they stay outside for an extended period of time.
