Cherry Capital Airport reports 19% rise in passengers, setting new record

TRAVERSE CITY — Cherry Capital Airport said it served a record 935,816 passengers in 2025, a 19% increase over the previous record of 787,114 passengers and the busiest year in the airport’s history.

“This milestone is a testament to the Northern Michigan community and their unwavering support for the airport,” Kevin Klein, chief executive officer of Cherry Capital Airport, said. “We are honored that passengers trust us with their business and leisure travel, and we look forward to continuing to grow alongside them.”

The airport said in a Jan. 21 news release that the record-setting year reflected its role as a gateway for Northern Michigan, serving local residents while welcoming visitors from across the country and around the world.

In 2025, Cherry Capital Airport said it was served by seven airlines offering 20 nonstop destinations that connected Northern Michigan to regions across the nation and beyond.

The airport said momentum was expected to continue into 2026, with passenger growth projected alongside major infrastructure improvements.

This spring, the airport said it expected to break ground on its “Gates to the Future” terminal expansion project.

The airport said the project will add five new gates, expanded hold rooms, an enhanced security checkpoint and other passenger-focused upgrades. Construction was anticipated to begin in April, with completion expected in 2028.

Cherry Capital Airport said its focus remained on delivering a high-quality travel experience while supporting economic growth and connectivity throughout Northern Michigan.
