Winter Trails Day returns Jan. 17 at Timber Ridge with free skiing, snowshoeing and fat bike demos

TRAVERSE CITY — Winter Trails Day is set for Saturday, Jan. 17, at Timber Ridge Resort, with free winter trail activities including fat tire bike demos, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Per a Jan. 13 news release, the 16th annual event is hosted by TART Trails along with the Record Eagle, Vasa Ski Club, Brick Wheels, Northern Michigan Mountain Bike Association and Suttons Bay Bikes Resort.

Free rental equipment, including cross-country skis, snowshoes and fat bikes, will be available on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 10:30 a.m.

Organizers said a driver’s license is required for equipment check-out and people with their own equipment were encouraged to bring it.

Introductory ski lessons led by Vasa Ski Club members and TART Trails volunteers will run throughout the day, according to organizers.

TART Trails volunteers also will lead guided snowshoe hikes on a rolling basis starting at 11 a.m.

Fat bikes will be available for short demo rides through the Northern Michigan Mountain Bike Association.

Organizers said cookies and cocoa will be available by the fire. Brats and beer will be available at an outdoor grill for a suggested donation.

Although trail access and equipment use are free, organizers requested pre-registration. Pre-registration closes at 3 p.m. Jan. 16. On-site registration will be available starting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Timber Ridge.

TART Trails said event updates and cancellation information will be posted on its website and social media channels.

Donations to TART Trails are encouraged, with organizers saying contributions support maintenance and promotion of a year-round trail network. Donations can be made online or at the registration table.
