LAKE COUNTY— A Northern Michigan school district closed Monday because of a bomb threat called into the district.

Baldwin Community Schools in Lake County called off school early in the morning because of that threat.

Lake County Sheriff Rich Martin said they investigated with the help of Michigan State Police but found no evidence of a bomb.

He said they were doubtful about the validity of the threat because of the type of call and because other districts in the state also received the same type of calls Monday.

Martin said they still followed protocol to make sure it was not a real threat.

“It sounded automated, maybe artificial intelligence, AI or something like that. But, even though it doesn’t sound credible, we have to put our protocols into play. So the school, they put their emergency protocols in effect, and that’s when they told the school, bus drivers and everybody, that they were going to be closed for the day,” said Martin.

The Sheriff said he heard schools like Allendale and Ada in West Michigan also received similar threats.

He said he believes it may have been an automated threat sent to several schools in the state.
