Armed robbery suspect shot dead by Cadillac police officer

CADILLAC — An officer-involved shooting occurred on Jan. 2, 2026, when a Cadillac police officer shot and killed a 57-year-old male driver who pointed a firearm at him during a traffic stop. The incident followed an armed robbery reported in Wexford County.

The shooting happened at approximately 3:12 p.m. when the Cadillac Police Department responded to a broadcast from Wexford Central Dispatch regarding a robbery suspect and vehicle description.

The officer initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle matching the description at the intersection of Granite Street and Laurel Street in Cadillac.

During the traffic stop, the driver produced a firearm and pointed it at the officer, prompting the officer to discharge his weapon in self-defense. Following the incident, the police secured both the passenger and the vehicle involved.

The suspect was transported to Munson Hospital in Cadillac, where he was later pronounced dead. In accordance with standard procedure, the Cadillac Police Department has turned over the investigation to the Michigan State Police.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing. The Cadillac Police Department stated that there is no ongoing threat to the community as a result of this incident.
