Mental health crisis center offers 24/7 support in Northern Michigan

TRAVERSE CITY — Northern Michigan residents have experienced a challenging year marked by high-profile violent incidents including the Walmart stabbing, the Rebecca Park homicide and other crimes in public spaces, a combination that can increase stress, anxiety and feelings of isolation during the dark, cold winter months.

Michael Corby, behavioral health director at the Grand Traverse Mental Health Crisis and Access Center, said staying connected and maintaining daily routines can help support mental health.

“Connection is a huge benefit to our mental health… we have beautiful places to go up here to hike and get outdoors,” Corby said.

Corby also said it can help to set boundaries with social media and to seek help early before symptoms escalate.

The Grand Traverse Mental Health Crisis and Access Center, now in its first year, offers 24/7 access to social workers, peer support and same-day psychiatric care, according to the release.

“You are not alone,” Corby said. “The earlier you reach out, the better the outcome.”

Residents are encouraged to check in with loved ones, stay connected to daily routines and get outside whenever possible to combat stress and seasonal depression, according to the release.

For more information or assistance, residents can contact the Grand Traverse Mental Health Crisis and Access Center or visit its website.
