TRAVERSE CITY — A Northern Michigan man was spotted surfing in West Grand Traverse Bay during severe winter storm conditions that brought heavy snowfall and waves reaching 10 feet.
The scene unfolded as the winter storm hit the area, prompting warnings against road travel.
Local authorities advised residents to stay safe indoors, but the man went into the turbulent water wearing a wetsuit.
Reece LaPerriere was captured on video by a cameraman from 910 Media Group as he surfed at Clinch Park. He said he decided to surf after plans to ski changed.
“I was going to go skiing, but the hill was closed so I came here to do this instead!” LaPerriere said.
The combination of heavy snow and high waves created a dramatic backdrop as he rode the surf.
The video drew attention as local authorities continue emphasizing safety during winter storms.
