Charlevoix County nonprofits receive $184,000 to aid residents after ice storm

CHARLEVOIX COUNTY — Nearly a year after a devastating ice storm swept through Northern Michigan, the Charlevoix County Community Foundation has distributed $184,000 in relief funds to local nonprofits, helping residents recover from widespread damage.

The storm left downed trees, blocked roads, and extended power outages, with many residents without electricity for days. “Whether you give fifty thousand dollars or you give five, all of those dollars are pooled together so we can support our friends and neighbors across the county,” said Sara Ward, president of the foundation.

The foundation has spent months connecting donors with nonprofits that support residents’ essential needs, from food and emergency assistance to debris cleanup. Organizations like local food pantries, the Salvation Army Northwest Michigan, and the Community Action Agency were able to stretch the funds to serve as many people as possible.

Ward says the need didn’t end immediately. Grants were distributed over several months to cover debris removal, repairs to facilities, and financial support for residents who lost wages during the storm. “Supporting our nonprofit partners is foundational,” Ward said. “When our nonprofit partners are strong and healthy, they can serve the folks in our community who need their programs and services.”

While the specific ice storm fund has closed, the Charlevoix County Community Foundation remains ready to respond to future emergencies, continuing its mission of ensuring community needs are met.
