TRAVERSE CITY — A Traverse City educator at Eastern Elementary School received a major surprise this week after the Detroit Lions selected him as one of their “Touchdown for Teachers” honorees, awarding him two tickets to a Lions home game along with a $3,000 classroom grant.
The program recognizes Michigan teachers who make significant impacts in their schools and communities. Every year, the Lions honor educators who exceed expectations, striving to provide support for their efforts both within and beyond the classroom.
The surprise presentation took place this morning, where fifth-grade teacher Tom Cooper learned he had been chosen from nominations submitted across the state. He said the recognition strengthened his appreciation for the team and showed how committed the organization is to investing in Michigan communities beyond the football field.
The $3,000 grant will be used to improve classroom resources and expand learning opportunities for students. The Lions say “Touchdown for Teachers” is designed to uplift educators who often receive little public recognition despite the crucial role they play.
Cooper will attend the Steelers vs. Lions game on Dec. 21 with his family, where he’ll also be recognized on the field during halftime.
