MANISTEE, MUSKEGON — Consumers Energy will conduct tests of its emergency public warning sirens near several hydroelectric dams on the Muskegon and Manistee rivers next week.
Per a Dec. 5 news release, the tests are scheduled for Dec. 9 &10 at approximately 9:30 a.m.
On Dec. 9, sirens near the Rogers, Hardy and Croton dams on the Muskegon River will be tested.
On Dec. 10, sirens near the Hodenpyl and Tippy dams on the Manistee River will be tested.
Each test will include a voice message, a 30-second siren and a second voice message. Consumers Energy said the public does not need to take any action during the tests. The siren systems are tested twice a year in August and December.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission requires hydroelectric facilities to have the ability to quickly notify residents and visitors of any developing emergency.
In an actual emergency, sirens would sound only if a dam failure is imminent, prompting anyone on or near the river to evacuate immediately to high ground. Additional information would be provided on local radio and television stations.
Consumers Energy provides natural gas or electricity to 6.8 million residents across all 68 counties in the Lower Peninsula. More information is available at ConsumersEnergy.com.
