Antrim County hires firm for new public safety center design

BELLAIRE — The Antrim County Board of Commissioners has selected Abonmarche-Byce to provide architecture and engineering services for the new Public Safety Center in Bellaire, Michigan.

The decision follows a competitive bidding process in which six firms submitted proposals. Abonmarche-Byce was chosen for their extensive experience with jail design and their ability to start construction in 2026, which is expected to minimize cost increases.

The new Public Safety Center will house the Antrim County Sheriff’s Office, a jail, a 911 dispatch center, and an emergency management center. This comprehensive facility aims to enhance public safety services in the county.

Earlier this month, the Board hired Plante Moran Realpoint (PMR) to provide consulting services for the project. Abonmarche-Byce and PMR will collaborate to ensure the facility is designed efficiently and cost-effectively.

Voters approved a bond on Nov. 4, authorizing the County to borrow up to $18 million over 15 years to fund the project. The total project cost is capped at $27 million, with Abonmarche-Byce assisting in cost-cutting measures to meet this budget.

The County plans to keep the public informed about the project’s progress through regular updates, including press releases, social media posts, and a newsletter starting in January 2026.

The new Public Safety Center is expected to significantly improve emergency services in Antrim County, with construction slated to begin in 2026 and completion anticipated 12 to 16 months thereafter.
