Accidental shooting in Mecosta County leaves 16-year-old girl injured

SHERIDEN TOWNSHIP — The Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accidental shooting in Sheriden Township.

Deputies were called to a home near Harding Road and 55th Avenue around 10 p.m. Saturday night where they found a 16-year-old girl has been shot in the neck.

Deputies performed CPR until paramedics arrived, where she was transferred to Big Rapids hospital and later taken to Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

After conducting an investigation that included witnesses, it was determined that a 21-year-old man from Barryton accidentally shot her.

The Sheriff’s Office is reminding everyone to handle all firearms as if they’re loaded and to practice proper gun safety at all times.

The 16-year-old girl, whose name is not being released, is expected to survive.
