Congressman Moolenaar reacts to what could be the demise of the Gotion Battery Plant in Mecosta County

GREEN CHARTER TOWNSHIP — US Congressman John Moolenaar, a loud opponent of the proposed electric vehicle battery plant in Mecosta County because of Gotion’s ties to the Chinese Communist Party is reacting to what some say is the demise of the project

The future of the controversial Gotion battery plant in Mecosta County is now up in the air, after being served a default notice from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, claiming the company abandoned the site and with no work being done in the last four months.

Gotion is losing out on $175 million in tax incentives that had been approved for the project and will be forced to repay nearly $50 million they already received.

Congressman Moolenaar, it’s good news that the state has lost confidence in the project.

“It’s great that the voices of the people of Mecosta County Green Charter Township, their voices were heard. It’s been a David and Goliath situation where you have a small community that’s being sued by a company that wants to locate there. And, finally, that I think it’s going in the right direction for the people, in the community,” said

It’s unclear what happens next with the project and the land, which Gotion currently owns.

Gotion said in a statement they were not abandoning the project and look forward to working with state and local officials.

However, Green Charter Township Supervisor Jason Kruse said Friday, the lawsuit filed by Gotion against the township for breach of contract is still ongoing.
