TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Area Public Schools will recognize National Safe Schools Week from Oct. 20-24, emphasizing that keeping schools safe is a shared community effort.
Per an Oct. 17 news release, this year’s focus includes everything from bus safety to mental wellness, highlighting that students, staff, families, and community members all play a role in maintaining safe learning environments.
“Creating a safe environment for our students is our top priority, and it’s a team effort,” said TCAPS Superintendent Dr. John VanWagoner. “This week is about more than our security plans. It’s a chance to remind our entire community, including drivers, families, and students, that we all share the responsibility of keeping our schools safe.”
The district is asking drivers to be cautious near schools and buses, reminding them to stop when a bus’s stop arm is extended and to use designated crosswalks when dropping off or picking up students. TCAPS also urges motorists to avoid distracted driving to protect students traveling to and from school.
Beyond school hours, the district is promoting firearm safety at home and reminding families about Michigan’s Secure Storage Law. The law requires unattended firearms to be unloaded and secured if a minor is or is likely to be present.
A limited number of free gun locks, provided by the Michigan State Police, are available at the TCAPS Administration Building, 1009 S. Oak St., Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., while supplies last.
The district also encourages students and community members to report safety concerns through the 24/7 anonymous OK2SAY tip line, which helps prevent violence.
All TCAPS schools conduct regular safety drills, maintain secure entrances, and follow state-mandated security protocols. In addition to physical safety, the district is promoting mental wellness as part of its Safe Schools Week message. Families are encouraged to check in with their children and remind them that seeking help is a sign of strength.
