DNR collaborates with Moran Iron Works on new research vessel

ONAWAY — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Moran Iron Works are marking major progress in the construction of the R/V Steelhead II, a new state-of-the-art research vessel designed to advance fisheries research and conservation across Lake Michigan.

According to an Oct. 14 news release, on Sept. 22, DNR project lead Capt. Patrick O’Neill and his team toured the vessel at Moran Iron Works’ Onaway facility where the hull and all three levels have been laid out. The visit offered the first look at the vessel’s full scale and interior layout.

“It was neat to see the full footprint of the project come to life,” O’Neill said. “Walking through where our researchers will stand and run tests gave us a strong sense of how the vessel will function in action. We were all impressed—though there’s still plenty of work to be done before spring.”

The R/V Steelhead II is expected to begin sea trials next year, with plans to launch into Lake Charlevoix once the ice clears in spring 2026. The new vessel will replace the aging S/V Steelhead, which has supported DNR fisheries research for more than 50 years.

O’Neill said collaboration between DNR and Moran Iron Works has been key, with regular biweekly meetings and milestone site visits to ensure progress remains on track.

“Moran has been a pleasure to work with,” O’Neill said. “They truly want to deliver a vessel that meets our needs, and project manager Tyler James has been outstanding at keeping communication flowing.”

James said construction has passed the halfway point, crediting the teamwork among multiple partners including Superior Boats, Sterling Marine, Gregory Schultz Marine Services and Johnson & Wood.

“Moran Iron Works, with support from our many great partners, has now progressed past the 50% point on vessel construction,” James said. “The Michigan DNR continues to be a great partner during this vessel build. They continue to be engaged with the project to support the overall vision in providing a superior vessel that supports the research they perform for many years to come.”

The R/V Steelhead II will feature advanced stabilization, modern laboratories, and enhanced safety systems.

Officials said the vessel represents a long-term investment in Michigan’s natural resources and a commitment to sustainable fisheries management for decades to come.
