Illinois resident sentenced to up to 25 years for 2023 Cadillac sexual assault

LANSING — A Des Plaines, Illinois man has been sentenced to up to 25 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old from Cadillac in 2023, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced.

According to an Oct. 13 news release, Javier Mora, 22, was sentenced Oct. 9 by Judge Jason Elmore of the 28th Circuit Court in Wexford County to 12 to 25 years in prison. Mora pleaded guilty July 21 to two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, one count of engaging in child sexually abusive activity, and one count of using a computer to commit a crime.

According to Nessel’s office, Mora began communicating with the victim through online gaming platforms in April 2023 and later drove from his home in Illinois to Cadillac, where he committed the assault.

“I commend the Cadillac Police Department, Oasis Family Resource Center, the Wexford County Prosecutor’s Office, and our Operation Survivor Justice partners for their support in securing this sentence and providing assistance to the victim and her family,” Nessel said in a statement. “My office will continue to hold offenders accountable and ensure justice for survivors of sexual assault.”

Mora was initially charged by the Wexford County Prosecutor’s Office in November 2023. He was arrested in Illinois in January 2025 under Operation Survivor Justice, a partnership between the Michigan Department of Attorney General, local county prosecutors, and the U.S. Marshals Service.

The initiative focuses on locating and extraditing fugitive offenders with outstanding sexual assault warrants back to Michigan.
