Northern Lakes CMH seeks entries for Art of Recovery exhibit

TRAVERSE CITY — Northern Lakes Community Mental Health is accepting submissions for its 18th Annual Art of Recovery: The Human Journey show through Oct. 24.

The annual event is open to anyone who is recovering or has recovered from anything and lives in one of the six counties served by the agency — Crawford, Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Missaukee, Roscommon or Wexford. There is no cost to enter.

According to Kari Barker, Northern Lakes Community Mental Health’s director of customer relations, the event aims to bring the community together to celebrate healing, resilience and shared experiences.

“We have organized this show for the last 18 years as a way to convene community to celebrate the healing power and resilience of people, to combat stigma, and demonstrate that we are all in this human journey together,” Barker said.

She added that both artists and viewers often find the experience inspiring. “We have heard over and over how important the show is to people who submit art and feel empowered by the doing of it and sharing their stories, and for the people who come to view the art who realize that others have gone through challenges and come out the other side,” she said.

The Art of Recovery show will be displayed Nov. 3–26 in the McGuire Room of the Traverse Area District Library. A free public reception is scheduled for Nov. 18 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Some artwork may be for sale, with all proceeds going directly to the artist.
