TRAVERSE CITY — A $12.5 million expansion has been approved for the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA West campus. The renovations aim to increase overall capacity and offer a wider variety of facilities to better meet the needs of the community.
While renovations have not yet begun, fundraising efforts have nearly reached 7.5 million. Groundbreaking is expected by spring of 2026.
Planned additions include a new gymnasium with two wood-floor basketball courts and a walking track for more recreational options during the winter months. The expansion will also increase space for the Mary Free Bed physical therapy facility and the YMCA’s childcare center, allowing both services to operate more efficiently.
Currently, the YMCA serves approximately 16,000 members and 7,000 additional individuals through various programs and guest passes. The expansion will increase capacity to 30,000, aiming to better accommodate growing community demand.
If fundraising stays on track, a phase two will follow the initial expansion, featuring a state-of-the-art fieldhouse to further enhance the facility’s offerings.
