Charlevoix public locations receive life-saving Stop the Bleed kits

CHARLEVOIX — Split second decisions can mean life and death, so in an accident it is important to have every tool you can to try and save a life.

That’s why kits from the Stop the Bleed Campaign are so important.

Charlevoix Chief of Police Jill McDonnell tells us that bleed control is one of the leading causes of preventable deaths. She adds “ having these kits available at public places allows people that are out there nearby to access them so they can help aid people that are have uncontrolled bleeding. ”

The stations were installed next to the City’s Automated External Defibrillators or AEDs in high-traffic public areas.

The kits are now available at:

  • Depot Beach
  • Michigan Beach
  • Ferry Beach
  • City Marina
  • City of Charlevoix Airport
  • Charlevoix Municipal Golf Course
  • Mt. McSauba Recreation Area
  • City Hall

So, how do they work?

Chief McDonnell showed that the kits actually have 8 separate kits inside, containing scissors, gauze, a tarp, gloves, tape, a tourniquet, and a marker.

She adds that during the emergency, always make sure to call 9-1-1.

The city was able to place the kits thanks to a donation from Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital Trauma Program. It builds on recent upgrades to the City’s AED program that has been made possible by community contributions.

The Chief tells us “This is something that came out of, the school shooting in Connecticut. They there were so many children that passed away because of uncontrolled bleeding. And having these kits available may have saved a life. And a lot of these kits are in schools now in office buildings. They’re pretty readily available there in the public. ”
