Lake County Sheriff’s Office investigates reckless shooting, asks for community’s help

LAKE COUNTY — Lake County Deputies are asking for the public’s help as they investigate a reckless discharge of a firearm.

On September 20th, in the area of North Merillville Road and West Ten Mile Road, deputies found two separate homes that were hit by gunfire.

At this time, deputies are unsure of the location of the gunfire and the caliber used are unknown, and they are asking the public for help.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind citizens of Michigan’s Reckless Discharge of Firearm Law (MCL 752.861):

“Any person who shall willfully and wantonly discharge any firearm, without due caution and circumspection and without regard for the safety of others, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.”Additionally, state law requires that anyone discharging a firearm must ensure:

• A safe backdrop for every shot fired.

• They are at least 500 feet from an occupied dwelling, unless they have permission from the owner or occupant.
