UPDATE: Police said four people are now dead from the shooting at Grand Blanc Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The FBI has taken over the investigation according to a press conference held by law enforcement.
UPDATE: A second person has died in the Grand Blanc shooting at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
GRAND BLANC— 9 people were injured shortly after 10AM in a shooting at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan.
Police said a gunman drove his truck into the church, stepped out his vehicle and began shooting with an assault rifle.
Just before noon the Grand Blanc Township Police Department reported that in addition to the shooting the church was also on fire. The shooter is dead, and the fire has since been contained.
Michigan State Police released a statement saying, “We are aware of the incident at the church of Latter-day Saints on McCandlish Road in Grand Blanc. According to the Grand Blanc Township Police Department, there is no active threat to the public at this time. Please avoid the area as first responders are handling this situation.”
Around 2:55PM police reported that a person died at the hospital due to gunshots.
Names of victims have not been released.
President Donald Trump also addressed the attack on social media, writing, “I have been briefed on the horrendous shooting that took place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in Grand Blanc, Michigan. The FBI was immediately on scene, and will be leading the Federal Investigation, and providing full support to State and Local Officials. The suspect is dead, but there is still a lot to learn. This appears to be yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America. The Trump Administration will keep the Public posted, as we always do.”
Grand Blanc Township Police Department listed a reunification site at Trillium theater located on Holly and McCandlish Rd.
For those affected, counselors will be available at the Grand Blanc Township Police Department beginning Monday from 8AM to 8PM throughout the week.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer released a statement saying “My heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community. Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable. I am grateful to the first responders who took action quickly. We will continue to monitor this situation and hold the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Grand Blanc close.”
The shooting and the fire are currently under investigation.
